Practice Your Job Interview Answers In a Mock Job Interview!

The interview is the most important part of the job application process. It's a chance for you to show your personality, answer challenging questions, and prove that you have what it takes to be hired. Your preparation should start the minute you decide to go on the journey of looking for a new job, rather than a few days before your job interview.[1] So how can you make sure your answers in an interview are as good as they possibly can be? Try mock interviews!

Here are some tips on how to prepare for a mock job interview so that when it comes time for the real thing, there's no question that you'll ace it:

1. Know your resume inside and out!

You should be able to talk about your resume without hesitation. You've worked hard on it, so don't be afraid to defend it. It's a part of you, and it represents everything you're qualified for (and more).

You should also have an answer prepared for the question "What's the most impressive thing on your resume?" Make sure you're ready with an example that shows off your skills in a way that makes an impact and tells the interviewer something they don't already know about you.

2. Anticipate tough questions!

A common mistake that candidates make is over-preparing for the interview. This can lead to nervousness and a lack of confidence, which will be apparent in your answers. To avoid this, do some research on the company and industry you're interviewing for and think about what questions are most likely to come up.

For example, if you're applying for a position at an accounting firm where they do tax returns or invoicing, it's likely that they'll ask how well you're able to work with numbers (and/or Excel). If there are specific types of questions that seem difficult or unrelated but could still be asked, practice those as well! It may seem crazy but it happens more often than not.

Tell us about yourself. Where do you see yourself in five years? Why did you leave your last job? Above are some examples of common questions to practice! 3. Ask questions of your own!

Do not be afraid to ask questions. The interviewer wants you to be engaged in the conversation and will appreciate your interest. They may even offer information about the company that you didn't know before, and that can really help your decision-making process.

Ask about the people who work there. What is their background? How long have they been there? Do they enjoy working at this company? Ask what it is like to work as part of a team or by yourself. Ask about the company's goals and objectives. What do they want to accomplish over the next few years? How does this position fit into these plans? If we were ahead of schedule or behind schedule with our goals, how would it affect my role in the department/company as a whole? Ask about their values or lack thereof! Even if you don't receive either position, you may use this question to determine whether or not the cultures of these two firms match your own. Additionally, it communicates to interviewers that telling the truth about your concerns is more important than trying to hide them. 4. Think about why you want THIS job.

It’s important to know what you want out of a job and why you want it. Do you have a specific reason for wanting this role? Do you want to work for this company in particular? Why do you want to work in this industry? If your answer is “I just need a job,” that won't be enough. You need to show the interviewer that there's something more behind why you're applying for this particular role.

5. Be ready to fill in the gaps.

Be ready to explain why you left your last job, even if it was because of a promotion or transfer.

Be ready to explain why you are leaving your current job. This can be tricky if they ask why you want a career change, so be prepared with an answer that supports your overall story.

Is there anything else that would be pertinent to the position for which you're giving the interview? For example, if you have some experience writing technical documentation then be prepared to explain how this fits into what the company does and why it's relevant to its mission statement.
